Have you ever walked into a store and seen an item marked 50% off and felt tempted to purchase it? You’re not alone. Companies tend to market sales to consumers in order to gain profit through methods such as marketing on social media and pushing sales-oriented employees onto store customers.

First, companies tend to engage with consumers through posts on social media where they highlight sales. Nail technician Julissa Mercado stated that she can influence sales by prioritizing “following trends with popular music and using new products. This helps catch the eye of clients.” Through marketing tactics such as this, companies are able to bring in more customers through visual appeals that will not only keep them engaged, but in the product companies are selling. While these tactics tend to leave consumers with the feeling of excitement, companies pursue this route in order to generate more sales.

Furthermore, the employment of sales executives are meant for the purpose of gaining profit. Everstage reports that “Account Executives in SaaS (Sales as a Service) companies, the 2024 median annual on-target earnings (OTE) reached $190,000 [...] This marks an increase from $167,000 in 2022” (Krishnaswamy, 2026). This statistic reveals that companies are progressively paying sales executives more each year, which indicates that sales are benefiting the company at a much higher rate as the years go on.  An anonymous boutique sales associate mentioned that she “focuses on greeting customers, giving constructive feedback on clothing, or displays products that best fit their needs, all in order to get the client to purchase the products.” Forbes made an interesting point that “an impressive 91% of sales representatives have mastered the art of upselling, with these efforts accounting for an average of 21% of their companies’ total revenue” (Haan, 2024).

The next time you see something 50% off, remember to be more cautious and keep yourself informed. When companies market the products to customers and make them feel more engaged with the process of purchasing items, consumers will tend to buy the items more often than not. This will lead to an increase in revenue for the company.
